La canción que da nombre al álbum, "Rare", es una muestra de la nueva faceta más libre y segura de sí misma de Selena Gómez. "Rare" es uno de los discos más emocionales (el tercero) que ha sacado la intérprete de "Love You Like a Love Song", con el cual regresa tras cuatro años de ausencia en los escenarios.

La cantante ha comentado que cada canción fue inspirada por el viaje emocional de los últimos años, desde las decepciones, los momentos de depresión y ansiedad hasta llegar al punto de dejar atrás lo malo, redescubrirse y reinventarse este último año.
